Lets use crowdsourcing against ticks.

Lyme Disease and Black-legged ticks (deer ticks) have run rampant in Canada for too long now and many pet owners or even humans themselves are getting exposed and getting bit. Let’s keep each other informed to the calendar year where those nasty ticks are and stay out of those areas.

Recently, I learned the city where I reside has stopped accepting applications for pet-related tick incidents and submissions. So I created this map strictly to help people report and identify tick risk locations like parks.

Help populate the map so the community is aware of the exposed areas in and around Canada.

Map

View it here!

Here’s how you can contribute:

https://forms.gle/sDAjCYF9YAnXhQrd8

Simply, fill out this form. The key is to fill the location as accurately as possible to keep this dataset clean. Thank you in advance for your contributions!

Please let us know when this tick was encountered, how many, and where. We only accept submissions for Canada in 2020! Every season, the ticks could stay or move on, we won’t really know. If this cause is helping people, I’ll be happy to repeat the project in future years.

TICK SUBMISSION FORM: https://forms.gle/c53d4wcZ2kN2yRHFA, or just fill the one above.

Have a long list of tick cases to report?

If you wish to submit a bulk dataset, please follow this schema for your data columns. It’s best submitted in a spreadsheet or csv (Google Sheets / Excel, etc.). We welcome veterinary clinics to report their findings to populate this map for the community.

Column A - <leave blank>
Column B - <leave blank>
Column C - Date & Time it happened (e.g. 10/31/2019)
Column D - Number of Ticks
Column E - Tick/Insect Attached or Biting? (e.g. Yes, No)
Column F - Attached to? (e.g. Dog, Human, Other)
Column G - City / Town / Municipal
Column H - Province/Territory
For Columns I & J, in each row, only fill ONE, not both
Column I - GPS Coordinates (e.g. 82.482837, -62.186375)
Column J - Location Name (Make sure google maps can find it!)
Column K - <leave blank>

Giving an accurate location

Having trouble with locating the accurate spot where the tick got aboard? Let me show you an example of how to find an exact location in a large park.

Problem: You hiked in Rouge Park, Toronto, Canada. You know approximately where you went but Rouge Park is so big, you don’t want to mark the entire place.

Solution:

maps.google.ca -> search Rouge Park
  1. Go to maps.google.ca
  2. Navigate to Rouge Park, or pan with your mouse.
  3. Click a more accurate spot on the map.
  4. Copy + Paste the GPS Coordinates.
  5. Submit that in the form.
Copy + Paste the GPS Coordinates

For more information on how to prevent ticks, identifying Lyme Disease, how to remove ticks, etc.; tick submission for testing, public health advisory, here’s some useful links below for Toronto, Canada ONLY.

If you wish to submit tick(s) for testing or public health, be sure to check your municipality or local government health organizations for their services

If you want to create something for your own country, go right ahead. I’ll be happy to share what I did.

Disclaimer: Please do not substitute this effort with public health. If you or your pets have encountered ticks, be sure to make the appropriate medical arrangements. This map is strictly for helping inform pet owners identify parks with ticks.
